Rainy Days and Mondays....

Class Umbrellas Needed!
If you have any spare "large" umbrellas at home that you would be willing to donate to the class, it would be a great blessing. On rainy days, getting to other buildings for Special Areas is a wet mess! I have five "class umbrellas", but with our class being so large, a few more would be so helpful!

Several of you have already sent in your deposits and permission forms early. Thank you for that! For everyone else, please remember to send these with your child tomorrow.

Tomorrow is Blue & Gold Day. The Upper Schoolers are meeting for breakfast at IHOP tomorrow. I was thinking of having a breakfast drop-in at the Dorchester Road Chick-Fil-A, starting at 7:15 in the morning. If you can make it, fantastic! If you can't , no worries! It is just an extra way for us to come together as a class family. We will plan to depart from CFA by 7:45 to get to school. We will be settling on the carline sidewalk for the Annual Blue & Gold Parade sometime between 8:00-8:30.

The class is just too precious today all dressed in black with their antennae! I can't wait for you to see!

My Cup Runneth Over

I just wanted to thank the following people for their kindness!
Christy Fox- for the trimmer
Kim Murray- for the antennae for Spirit Week
Lisa Floyd- for ant stickers and door decorating
Jennifer Jackson- for offering to get us an ant farm
Ginny Lagger- for being our "Filing Fairy"
Anita Whitehurst- for helping me carry loads in the mornings

The Ants Go Marching....to Columbia

Please pack a bag lunch for our trip tomorrow. The previous blog entry has all of the carpools and driving directions. You are welcome to bring money for the Gift Shop, if you wish. Your child does not need to bring a bookbag tomorrow. I am not assigning any homework tonight. Just bring the signed Progress Report that is going home today to be returned. Your child may bring a DS for the drive (since it is a long ride) as long as you realize they are responsible for it. Electronics must remain in the cars while we are in the museum.

Please see the previous post regarding Spirit Week activities.

Spirit Week

I was notified today about the following Spirit Day activities next week. Thank you to Lisa Floyd for heading up "door decorating" while we are in Columbia on Friday!

Monday: Disney Comes to CA - I am coming as Cruella DeVille...I would love to have all of my little 5th graders as dalmatians! How cool would that be?! Oooh....and maybe we can get Mr. Varella to bring a fire truck up to the school!! (For dalmatians...think black or white pants with white t-shirt with black spots, a dog collar, and a headband with ears!--You can even recycle the costume for the next Cow Day at Chick-Fil-A for a free meal!)
Tuesday: Tacky Day
Wednesday: Favorite Story Book Character
Thursday: Class Theme (We are going to try to find those little headband antennae. I used to see them everywhere....) If we can get these headbands and wear all black, I think that is as close to ants as we can get.
Friday: Spirit Day (Blue and Gold)

Each class will decorate their door Friday, 9/17 before spirit week.
Each class will make a sign for the Friday night homecoming game.
The classes will sit on curb in carline spot to cheer on the parade on Friday, 9/24.
All classes will also participate in the school-wide pep rally to encourage school spirit throughout all grades (arrive at gym by 2 p.m. on Friday 9/24).
All lower school classes will participate in these activities.

Speed Drills

Please pay attention to Speed Drill grades. Many of the children are "rusty" on some of these review skills and need some extra practice at home to get back on track! We do a Speed Drill four times each week. When signed papers come home each week, feel free to make a copy of the SD to use as extra practice. If you would like extra practice SDs, I have some available!

Finally Friday!

Mr. Jonathan Miller shared his fabulous books of the "Wonder Dachshund" series with us this morning in Chapel. We also had a visit from my very own Wonder Dachshund, Lola. If your child would like a personalized copy of one or both of his books, order forms are being sent home today. (I already have my copies!) The one set in Charleston was my favorite, but being the owner of a weenie dog, I had to get both! Mr. Miller plans to have his next book, The Adventures of Sammy the Wonder Dachshund in Space, published by Christmas. I am REALLY excited about that one!

Silly Band sales have racked up over $50 in sales so far for Kennedy Space Center! If you see any cool ones over the long holiday weekend that you would like to donate to the cause, send them Tuesday. The kids are particularly requesting the new "Silly Band Rings"!

Jonathan Miller, a Charleston-based children’s author, will address Cathedral Academy’s Lower School students on Friday, Sept. 3.   Miller, the author of the “Sammy the Wonder Dachshund” series, will discuss the writing process as well as rewriting, editing, publishing, and bookmaking with the students in grades K4 through 5th.  He will also detail the process he uses to illustrate the book series, which involves numerous layers of cardstock and construction paper. Miller typically spends 30 to 40 hours illustrating each page of his books.   Miller, a Clover native and College of Charleston graduate, has written two books, Sammy’s Last Week in Charleston and Sammy on Safari.  He appeared on ETV’s Traveling Author Series and had his work featured in the summer 2010 catalog for Vineyard Vines clothing.  Miller has presented his books and insights on writing with over 70,000 students in the past two years.   Cathedral Academy is a private, non-profit Christian school serving grades K4-12 and is located at 3790 Ashley Phosphate Road in North Charleston.
